The Eighties Strike Back
July 03, 2009 | Blog| www.kinkimag.com
Sometimes I am really pissed off by the fact that there are so many cool fashion labels on the other side of the globe, that are just out of our reach.
Why does everybody bitch about globalization when I can't even get one of the awesome dresses of "The Cassette Society"? I don't really understand why this is so difficult.
Like I said, The Cassette Society is a label from the other side of the world, more precisely from Down Under and was launched by two crazy 80's loving and Andy Warhol citing gals: Katie Boyd and Tania Rickards.
Even though cassettes are cheap, some what outdated and seem to love gorging on your favourite music on tape, the girls integrated them into their brand name in order to cherish their undying love to the 80's. ("Because we're all eighties gals at heart. And, in the eighties. It was all cassettes.") That is why their fashion is also bursting with 80's attributes: acid-washed denim can be found next to accentuated shoulder parts, distressed jeans and homages to 80's prom dresses. The Cassette Society Girl is brave at heart, sexy, androgynous and of course a bit grungy.
If you happen to be in Australia, New Zealand or even Japan, you might be in a lucky position to grab some amazing pieces from The Cassette Society. Until an online shop is set up that will give us a chance to finally get your hands on the truly swell brand, it's all about waiting, checking out the Cassette Society's website daily and supporting your local dealer.
All That Remains...

The Cassette Society has long been a streetwear staple in the country, Decking out the kids far and wide. Their RAFW show this year offered nothing less the most wearable denim, and comfy clothes in general. However, there was something different adorning the models bodies...Jewellery!
Styled to perfection by the lovely Imogene Barron the new venture deemed extremely worthwhile. It is hopefully soon to become a permanent fixture in The Cassette Society brand. This small collection contained interesting elements, including organic crystals, industrial chains and hard metals; all under the banner of their " That Heroine's Electric " range them. We hope that certain success means we will be seeing alot more in seasons to come.

Models featured crystal eyebrows and slick back hair and sci-fi long plaits all came from inspiration of erotic futurism, youthful revolt and the femme fatal in The Cassette Society's "That Heroine's Electric" show.

Disco Brows from The Cassette Society

As a borderline Gen X/Y, the word 'cassette' immediately conjures up memories of my first cass-single purchased for $2.95 of my hard-earned pocket money back in the Summer of 1987. Times have changed, but The Cassette Society delivered pure pop onto the catwalk at Australian Fashion Week with their That Heroine's Electric collection. Hard-edge sportswear and cocktail numbers stomped down the runway to the strains of Bjork's Army of Me. They also get my award for most innovative catwalk makeup of the week, with models' eyebrows replaced with thick strips of disco-esque gemstones in vivid hues. Unfortunately, we don't recommend getting the hot-glue gun out and trying this at home.

Always a fan of acid denim, Cassette Society didn’t disappoint with a rehashed collection of the best of the eighties (or worst depending on where you stand.) Body con shifts, midriff revealing tops and like-a-virgin tulle dresses will no doubt suit the general pants hipster girls, helping to add to there extensive collection of tight black mini dresses. While the sequined dresses, square shouldered cinched tunic dress and blue feathered shouldered dress showed some unique promise, the bulk of the collection was left looking predictably cooler than cool; just add black bowler hat, ripped stockings and docs for maximum scenester effect.

The Cassette Society's Katie Boyd and Tania Rickards are not affraid of provoking a little controversy. Bra Boy, Koby Abberton, was seated in the front row of their femme-inspired collection showing That Heroine's Electric. The parade was also running more than an hour late. But, as they say that's fashion baby. When the clothes finally made it out onto the runway there was an eclectic mix of barely-there mini's, in metallic black and black & white, tutu inspired black and what tulle gowns and swimwear: noteworthy swimwear.

The Disco Brow was the style du jour on the runway in Sydney at Australian Fashion Week, as 'Cassette Society' presented 'That's Heroine's Electric collection'. The energized event was akin to the unforgetable disco era with a playful new age twist.
The model's eyebrows were glimmering with disco-esque gemstones, each clad in eclectic cocktails numbers and edgy sport themed fashions as they paraded down the catwalk to Bjork's Army of Me.
